Kamran Syed Relief Initiative was created in honor of a young man who loved nature and earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy so he could help people. His life was cut short — this organization carries his motto forward.
Water. Sustenance. Improved living. Education. A path to self-sufficiency.
We work for the betterment of the environment and humanity by meeting people's most basic needs first — and then helping them build toward independence.

In his memory
Why this foundation exists
This foundation was created in memory of Kamran Syed, a young man who spent his life outdoors and in service of others. He earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy specifically so he could help people heal — and he believed, simply, that life is best lived in the service of others.
His life ended far too soon. Rather than let that motto end with him, his family and friends built this organization to carry it forward: funding the basic needs — water, food, shelter, education — that let people and communities help themselves.

Our mission
Basic needs first, self-sufficiency next
We work for the betterment of the environment and humanity by providing individuals and communities with basic needs — while investigating a realistic path toward self-sufficiency alongside them.
Clean water
Funding for drilling and maintaining water wells in communities that lack reliable access.
Sustenance
Support for food security so that families and children aren't going without.
Improved living
Repairing homes, schools, and places of worship damaged by time, weather, or neglect.
Education
Funding to hire teachers, so children in underserved communities keep learning.
Our approach
We fund the people already doing the work
We don't try to do everything ourselves. We collaborate with individuals, families, orphanages, and other nonprofits — both domestic and international — to understand what a community actually needs. Then we provide guidance and funding to meet that need.
Listen first. We work directly with the people closest to the need — families, orphanage staff, local nonprofit partners — before deciding how to help.
Fund the fix. That might mean hiring a contractor to drill a water well, repair a school roof, or restore a place of worship.
Invest in teachers. We provide funding to hire teachers where schools exist but staffing doesn't.
Stay accountable. All of our efforts and funds are devoted to these charitable and educational activities — nothing else.

Governance & transparency
How we stay accountable
All activities are conducted in collaboration with other section 501(c)(3) organizations. Distributions to, or for the benefit of, individuals are limited to those who are part of a charitable class, as that term is defined by the IRS. You can read the IRS's own explanation here: irs.gov — Meaning of "charitable class".
Any distribution made to a nonprofit organization that is not itself exempt under section 501(c)(3) is made in accordance with the expenditure responsibility guidelines set out in Rev. Rul. 68-489.
All of the organization's efforts and funds are devoted to these charitable and educational activities.
